Are you interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)?

San Diego Mesa College has a variety of student programs that are aimed in providing the resources, tools, and skills to help its students succeed in STEM disciplines. Our mission is to support and develop methods that will improve academic achievement and ensure students are supported throughout their academic journey in STEM related fields.

STEM Core

Newly launched in fall 2017 is STEM Core, a program designed to prepare students for degrees in STEM disciplines. The program focuses on building a course track that is designed with having math pre-requisites completed within a year. Students are eligible to apply for paid summer internships with different partners of STEM Core after program completion.

STEM Center

NOW OPEN! The STEM Center is located in the Learning Resource Center (LRC-115) and is open M-F 9am-5pm. Now available to students: calculator rentals, laptop checkout, access to STEM tutors, drop-in counseling, model/material checkout, lounge area, and much more!

STEM Conexiones

Launched in 2017 is the STEM Conexiones (STEM Connections) program that focuses on creating connections within the Mesa STEM community. Student, faculty, and pathway connections are pillars to the STEM Conexiones grant. Through this program students can apply for a STEM faculty-mentor that will mentor them over a semester, get access to STEM tutoring, and have priority to a designated STEM counselor.

Innovation Research Lab

The Innovation Research Lab aims to empower our diverse student population to obtain their academic goals by providing educational access, support, inclusion, and lifelong learning opportunities at San Diego Mesa College. As a community college research center, we promote student success by linking faculty with student mentees to develop exciting research ideas, encourage scholarship, and nurture scientific identity.

Why STEM?

Take on the challenge to learn about the disciplines that investigate and seek to understand the natural and technological world. Many students question pursuing a degree in a STEM field without the knowledge that programs are specifically created to ensure every student can be successful. Here at Mesa, there is a community of support available to every student and being involved in STEM allows students to focus on different disciplines.

Science

Science is the broadest field of study in STEM; it includes different disciplines like biology, chemistry, geology, oceanography, astronomy, psychology, and many more. As science majors, students can learn and study life processes and relationships that shape our world. Scientists generally hold a graduate degree with an emphasis in a specialization. Exciting break-through research is currently being conducted in the science disciplines, now is the time to major in science!

Technology

Technology encompasses computer information science and related fields. As the 21st century continues to progress toward the digital era, the demand on professionals with a Computer Science degree continues to increase. Careers currently in high demand include cyber security, computer analysts and software developers. Many professionals can begin worth with a bachelor’s degree.

Engineering

Engineers design, create, enhance, and produce materials and systems that are used in everyday practices. Most engineers are employed with a bachelor’s degree, although some may choose to continue to graduate school. Engineers can choose a variety of disciplines to study such as Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Environmental, Industrial, Electrical and Nuclear.

Math

Mathematicians analyze data, sequences, and solve real-world problems using data. Many mathematicians earn their Ph.D.’s before entering the workforce. Careers include, but are not limited to becoming a data analyst, teacher or professor, statistician or even focus on applied economics/finances.
